COMPASS FLOORCLOTH
|
One day while Dennis Belanger and his wife Sheila were pursuing their passion of antiquing, Sheila had observed a Compass Rose Floorcloth in an antique publication. She suggested to Dennis that he design a floorcloth for their home in New Hampshire. So Dennis, being a mechanical engineer and artist, researched the 17th century production, technique and art of painting floorcloths. Now fifteen years later, Dennis is respected for his historically accurate painted floorcloths.
“Floorcloths number among the earliest forms of interior decoration”. They brought pattern and color indoors and brightened housekeeping tasks as well. The appeal of making floorcloths for Dennis lies in re-creating designs that are historical. Dennis also takes pride in knowing that he is making something that will be in someone’s home for years to come. Each of Belanger’s Floorcloths are crafted from raw sailcloth that is sized, stretched, and primed, then bound on each side. Once a base coat is applied, he marks in paints the design by hand using oil paints and historic colors. They are then finished with many coats of varnish.
