Philadelphia Bird Tree
PHILADELPHIA BIRD TREE
Bird carvings are found in many forms. There are wonderful realistic carvings and then there are folk art birds, very whimsical, "not at all like God's birds."

Folk art bird carvings that are so desirable today first appeared in the mid to late 19th century in southeastern Pennsylvania. They were carved by itinerants, some known, and others unknown. They would trade their carvings for shelter and food and brought great joy into their austere homes.

LOOP TREE

My work is greatly influenced by these early carvers. I try to carve each bird with a sense of movement, painting them with traditional Pennsylvania colors such as those found on blanket chests, fraktur and folk carvings.

Each carving is really a "one-of-a-kind' and is hand carved from a single piece of wood. They vary in size and form. I hope they make you smile.
