DETAIL OF TERRA COTTA & OCHRE BOWL
These intricately painted and gilded wood bowls began as a balance to my work in the mural painting tradition, as they allow me the pleasure of working on a more intimate scale.
Over the years I have been inspired and fascinated by American and Asian laquerware, medieval manuscripts and the frescoes of Pompeii, and these influences can be seen in the pattern and flow of every bowl I make. Each piece is carved or turned from one solid piece of wood. After careful preparation I hand-paint finely detailed, original designs using an earth-bound palette that surrounds central areas of patinated gilding. The combination of color, gold and wood blends to create works of art with a warm, classical quality that evokes a sense of history unique to each person who sees them.
My desire is that these decorative bowls bring the feeling of joy, beauty and tradition that I feel as I create them.
